Lately I've been playing nothing but Playstation and Saturn games, and you know what? I'm starting to get tired of them. Not that there aren't any good games on those systems (There are loads of them), I just decided I need a change of pace for awhile. So what I did was get out many of my older game systems (Turbo, Jag, Jag CD, SNES, ect..), and started hooking them up.
It took many tries to get my Turbo Grafx working. It has been a long time since I played it due to the fact that the original inputs are worn. It is an extreme exercise in frustration trying to get this system hooked up. Alunimun foil, stuffed in various places, finally did the trick.
I really wanted to play the turbo, because it holds many memories. I remember the hot Turbo vs. Genesis debates that went on in all the gaming mags. I had a Genesis, and was always on it's side. Towards the end of the Turbo, I finally bought one. I soon realized the Genesis wasn't a clear winner. Although more powerful, nothing could match the cuteness, and playability of the Turbo. I immediately feel in love with it.
The first turbo game I began to play was "Air Zonk". It's a shooter, but not like the shooters you and I are accustomed to. It features Zonk, who is your main character. He is a super hip, sunglass wearing, flying superhero of a sort. Rather then control a ship or something like in traditional shooters, you control Zonk.
Although cute, this is a serious shooter. There are loads of powerups, and weapons. One minute your shooting boomerings, the next your firing a deck of cards. I never took the time to count all the different weapons, but I can say there are alot!! I just wish all shooters had this much firepower.
This game was great from start to finish. It had many small touches that makes it stand out from your Generic shooter. One that I liked was the ability to fight with a friend (Not a human friend, rather a game friend). You have your choice of 10 friends to fight with, each with his/her own abilities. You can choose the friend, or have the computer pick it. This adds much replayability to an already great shooter.
My only complaint was it's length. The 5 levels the game has seem to be over before you know it. Yet, it's not a big deal because this is a game you'll want to play over and over.
Well, all I can say is if you don't have a Turbo Grafx, try to get one. I'm sure nowadays you can pick one up really cheap. It will be worth your money. Turbo games seem to have a unique cuteness, that cannot be matched on other systems. The games are not technically superior, just great fun.
