As the name implies this Doom ripoff contains plenty of blood. This is good if your a gore freak, but for me, I perfer a more subtle approach to blood in games. I'm really not into Demonic and totally gory games. I feel that a little blood can enhance the realism of a game at times, but I don't like games drenched in it. With that said, I promise my biased againsed blood won't influence me to rate this game lower than it deserves just because of it's theme. I know that many gamers like this sort of thing so I'll review it on it's own merits.
Like I said above, it's a Doom ripoff. It's as if Monolith played Doom and said to themselves "Doom is a little too mild for us, lets up the gore factor" Blood's almost exactly like Doom. It's own claim to it's own fame is, well the blood. I have never seen a game before that contains as much blood and gore as this game. They really laid it on thick. That's OK that it resembles Doom though. Many games have been made this way and players keep eating them up. Matter of fact, any well programmed game that plays like Doom is sure to equal lots of $$$ for it's developers.
Graphically speaking the game looks good (That is if you like hell, cemeteries, demons ect..). I was able to run it in 640x480 256 mode with a P75 and 16 MB RAM. It was a little slow, but it still looked and felt much better than if I ran it in a low-res mode. With this mode, all the details were really pronounced. The developers really spent a lot of time to make the graphics of this game fit it's theme. The attention to detail is almost unbelievable. Kill a zombie, and it's pieces stays on the ground. Shoot an enemy, and blood spurts all over. Even use of your flare gun causes the baddies to burst into flames and continue toward you. Just a casual walk down the corridors reveal body parts all over the place. As you probably guessed, this game is gruesomely detailed!!
There are many weapons and powerups in Blood. The shareware version contains the following weapons: Pitchfork, Flare gun, Sawed off shotgun, Thompson's machine gun, Dynamite bundles, and Incinerator. The complete version contains these weapons in addition to the shareware weapons: Remote detonaters, Proximity detonaters, Voodoo doll, Aerosol can, Tesla cannon, and Life leech. Additionally there are many powerups and inventory items (too many to list), so your sure to have many inventive ways to kill.
The sound is decent, I just hope your not one who has nightmares easily. Cause if you do your sure to hear the eerie sounds over and over as you sleep. I tell ya, I don't let my 5 year old see or even hear this game (And generally I'm a pretty liberal guy). It's that scary.
I found myself starting to like blood. It was generally well programmed and easy to get into. The attention to detail really sets it apart from other games of this nature.
The biggest problem I found with the game was that in some instances it seemed a little too hard. Sometimes I'd go into a room and get killed before I knew what hit me. I began to play by saving my game after clearing out each room. In some rooms I would have to reload the game a dozen or so times before I could clear it out. At times this was annoying, but the fact that I kept going back is a testament to how fun the game can be.
Overall, Blood is a decent game. If you like this type, I'd give it a try. Afterall, the shareware version won't cost you a dime. How could you lose?
