This is going to be one of my shortest reviews ever. The reason is that I couldn't get into Casper at all. I mean, I tried, I just couldn't handle the slow pace of this game.
Here's a little about the game:
Casper the game is based on the blockbuster movie Casper, which is based on the popular comic series Casper the Ghost. If you haven't heard of Casper, he is a friendly ghost. Casper wants nothing more in life then to be accepted. In this game you guide Casper through Whipstaf Manor on a quest for friendship, and search for the lost pieces of the Lazarus machine.
In this game Casper must solve various puzzles, while constantly being harassed, tormented, and tricked by his three ghostly uncles Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso. You must find various tokens of friendship, which are located throughout Whipstaf Manor, to give to the Harveys in hopes of gaining their trust.
Throughout the game, you pick up various items to help you on your quest. The items are composed of keys, food, or morphing items. Keys are for opening doors, food is for energy, and morphing items help you to change shape. This allows you to do things that were impossible before.
The game is an overhead 2D game which incorporates some 3D elements (Such as rendered ghosts) . As far as looks go, I can't really fault it. Shading is good, light sourcing is good, and the Ghosts all have a transparent look to them that is very well done. On the other hand, with the exception of the ghosts, there isn't too much here that looks much better then a good 16 bit game.
The sound is pretty good. Sounds like something you'd hear at the theater. It is a little repetitious though, as it is repeated often.
One of my biggest problems with the game is that it doesn't seem to fit a proper age group. It is too childish and cutsy for most adults, at the same time has too complex puzzles for children. I'm 31, and I gave up quickly, my son is 6 and soon quit too.
There are a few neat things in the game like morphing, hidden areas and the ability to travel through air vents. For me though, it just wasn't enough.
I found myself bored to tears searching the manor in this fairly un-eventful adventure. To be fair, this is just how I felt. I'm sure there are those who love this kind of game. It just wasn't for me. I perfer lots of action, and I definetely didn't get it here.
In conclusion I say: If it's
your kind of game, you may like it. The game looks good, has a good feel,
and really cute characters. For most though, I say pass. It's way too slow
moving to be enjoyable.
