~Reviews in Brief- Sega Genesis~

Sega Genesis Brief Reviews

This system is long gone, but not easilly forgotten. With the Sega Nomad that is capable of playing Genesis games, and the advent of Genesis ROM's, Sega Genesis games are back in demand again. I gotta tell you, this is easilly one of my all time favorite systems.

Lately, I have really been getting into Genesis games. I bought a Nomad (Not a Gameboy!!), so now I can play these games at work. Actually, I have been spending more time with Genesis games then I have with Playstation games. Re-living my past Genesis memories has been great fun lately.

The reviews you find here are from the Genesis games played on one of 3 systems. 1) The Sega Genesis itself. 2) The Sega Nomad. 3) An emulated PC version played on the Genecyst emulator.  There may be slight variations in the Nomad or Genecyst versions, but overall they are exactly the same games.

We need writers!! Think you can write decent reviews in this format? We'd love to have your contributions!

Alex Kidd (Sega)
This has always been one of my favorite side-scrolling Genesis games. It's kinda crude graphically, but it has gameplay features up the kazoo. This game has it all! Hidden levels, high jumps, pogo sticks, motorcycle riding, ect. ect.. ect... Heck, it even has a gambling game of sissors, rock, paper to give you a chance of gaining money. If you lose, you could lose your life.. Neat!!  I beat it several times, and still like to play on ocassion. A well worthy purchase.

Air Diver (Seismic)
This game tries to be an AfterBurner clone, but fails miserably on all accounts. The graphics suck, the music is repetitious, and the fun is non-existant. I bought this game when the Genesis first came out (for 50 bones), and I have never felt so ripped off in all my life. I wouldn't take this game even if it was free now. Please... pass on it!!

Alien Storm (Sega)
Blast the Aliens, save the people!... Doesn't take too long to realize this game is a stinker. Varied levels, with changing perspective, and choice of characters don't save this one. It's just not fun. Pass at any price!

Altered Beast (Sega)
This is the game Sega choose to sell Genesis systems. Although I question the reasoning, I still liked this game. The graphics were awesome (at the time), the sound was great, and I was amazed at what the then new Genesis was capable of. The only problem with this game was that it was painfully slow. Still, it was pretty good and well worth a playthrough today.

Blockout (Electronic Arts)
A 3D puzzle game in which you place 3D blocks to form a flat section. Once you do it is removed (similar to Tetris but 3D). Actually, this isn't a very good description but I've got no other way to describe it. This is a game that I have owned on two systems. The Atari Lynx, and the Sega Genesis. Despite it's critics, the game is pretty fun. Control and perspective take some adjusting to, but after that it is highly addicting. Recommended!!

B.O.B. (Electronic Arts)
Oh God!..... I almost hate to review this game..... We got this when my son was about 3 and it soon became his favorite game. He couldn't play, but he knew how to make mommy and daddy play. I truely got sick of this after months and months of being forced into playing it. Actually, it's not a bad game, it's just that I got tired of it.  The game is a side scrolling action game with this cute character named B.O.B.  B.O.B. fights his way through 45 levels using trick gadgets, and various weapons. The graphics are good, the levels are large and well designed, and overall it is a joy to play (for the first year or so  :) . In it's day, it was quite a technical achievement. Good solid game.

Bubsy (Accolade)
This is one of the best side scrolling action games available for the Genesis. When it was released, I thought Bubsy would be the next video game supercharacter (like Mario, and Sonic). The game had everything. Cute character, tons of animated effects, and georgeous graphics.  This game was a real winner!! Don't know what happened to Bubsy. Subsequent versions were sub-standard, and the character never really gained the attention that it should've. Anyway, this version is very good so give it a try if you can.

Kinda unique!.. This is a side-scrolling RPG. I don't believe I've played one quite like this before. Graphics are decent, and the sound is ok. The story is pretty good, and can be involving. I liked the layout. Actually, I think I perfer side scrolling RPG's to overhead ones. The battles are a little weak, but overall a decent title.

Captain America and the Avengers (Data East)
I just love superhero based games, as I grew up collecting comic books. It's been awhile since I have read one, but the Avengers was one of my favorites. Needless to say, I was very eager to play this game. This is a side scrolling, action based fighter. You begin by having your choice of 4 super cool characters. Three I remember, one I do not. The three,  Captain America, Hawkeye, and Iron Man were some of my favorites. The group, as in the Avenger comics, head off to battle Red Skull.  The game seems to start off perfect. You have cool characters, and a choice of fighters, but after that there's nothing. The graphics are poor, the gameplay is repetitious, and overall it feels rushed. It would seem to me that if you were going to make a licensed game, you would go the extra mile (so to speak) to make it exceptional. I know Data East is capable of far better. Too bad, this could've been cool.

Columns (Sega)
A neat little puzzle game that is good fun for awhile. You have these colored gems, and you must shift the colors until you get 3 that are alike to line up. Once you do the, they will disappear, sometimes eliminating mutiple gems as they are removed. This is an especially fun two player game. Sadly though, it gets repetitious after awhile as there isn't much play variation.  Good for a rental!

Comix Zone (Sega)
A very cool side scrolling fighting game. In this game, you actually play a comic book character, complete with  overhead "bubble" quotes. I really liked this game. It has a fresh concept, and is a complete blast to play. The biggest problem is with saving (like many games), but this can be overcome by playing an emulated version.

Cool Spot (Virgin)
The mascot for 7up is appearing in his first video game ever (I think). Cool spot is a side scrolling, adventure game that was apparently designed to convert cola drinkers to 7up. This game has alot going for it, but in the end falls flat on it's face. The graphics are good, the sound is decent, and the character is likeable. Problem is, it's just not fun. It is way too hard in places. It would probably be ok if you could save anywhere, but as it sits it's just too frustrating. I say give it a try if you find an emulated version with a save in progress feature.

Decap Attack (Sega)
A neat little game that can be quite a bit of fun. It's kinda morbid looking with it's ghostly theme, but it was done in a cutesy way. It probably won't offend anyone. Not much replay value, but the play mechanics are great, and it's great fun while it lasts!

Dynamite Headdy (Treasure)
When this game came out, everyone just raved about it. It had a cute charcter, the game was nothing like anything ever seen before, and was designed by Treasure (Which in itself speaks volumes). I admit, it was an OK game, but I never really understood all the fuss over it. I liked Gunstar Heroes, and Light Crusader way more then I liked this game. To me, it is good, but not stellar. I never finished it though. This week, I'll take it to work and play on my Nomad. If my opinion changes, I'll let ya know.

Elemental Master (Techno Soft)
Another cool shooter from the makers of Thunder Force 3! This game doesn't exactly measure up to that caliber (best Genesis shooter ever), but it is a great game. The game is an overhead shooter, in which you have a guy (a magician or something) as the shooter, rather then a ship. You battle your way through demons, wizzards, bats, and all the like. The game has a high replay value, as you  have four different levels to choose from. Graphics, are rockin with great explosions, and kick ass powerups. I  tell you, Techno Soft is really good at putting together a shooter. So, if you like shooters, and want something a little bit different, you won't go wrong with Elemental Master.

Exile (Telenet Japan Co.)
I'm going to do something that I haven't done before. I'm gonna review a game that I haven't really played through. This may seem un-fair, but my initial impressions of the game are so poor that I had to write. Hopefully I can save someone some money (Besides, I don't think I could stomach playing this game all the way through). Exile is a Genesis RPG, that looks and plays more like a bad 8 bit NES game. The characters are tiny, and the dialog (what I seen of it) was horrid. I downloaded the emulated ROM version, and there wasn't even any sound. Actually, I don't know too much about this game. I don't even know if it was released here. I could check, but I have better things to do with my time. If you see it, don't buy it. Heck, don't even try the ROM. It's just not worth your time.

Here's an example of how a good overhead shooter should be made. Awesome firepower, plenty of powerups, and zero instant hits. Another game that ticks me off!!! The game starts out awesome!! Super cool weapons, fast smooth gameplay, and pretty cool graphics. Problem is that it is way too hard. If you want to complete this game, you'd better be prepared to play levels over and over again. Absolutely no in game save feature (like most Genesis games). If you want this game, it is cool. This is a very cool shooter, that is tons of fun to play. It's overhead shooter that features multi-layered scrolling backgrounds, and some of the coolest powerups you have ever seen. The graphics are great and the action is intense! It's one of the best shooters of it's kind on Genesis. I only had tow complaints. 1) No save anywhare feature (The emulated version is worth the download). 2) There are too many stagnant non-moveable objects on screen. I liked it!!

I gave this one a little playtime, but not alot. It's way too satanic for me! Very very gory, and filled with spells, demons, magic, blood, ect... Just like James Pond II except  this game is hugh, and the graphics aren't as good. I actually liked this game better, but I don't understand why they didn't make the graphics better. Klax (Tengen)
This is my favorite puzzle game of all time. To me, this game is even more addicting then Tetris. You have these little blocks coming down a conveyor belt, and you must line them up in different patterns to complete your Klax. Each wave is different. Some you go for diagonals, some for points, ect..  The action gets intense as you must flip back blocks (only to have them come back again), if things don't look good for a Klax. Great fun! This game is totally unique. You have this marble, and you must roll it to the bottom of it's platform before time runs out. There are various obstacles along the way like: other marbles, dropoffs, thingies (I don't know what to call half this stuff!), ect.. The marble controls great, and the challenge is supurb. This was one awesome golf game when it came out. It seemed to have everything. Things such as: Real tournaments, digitized players and sounds, real stats, battery backup, rotating grid, and a host of other features. At the time, it was the most awesome thing around, and I played the heck out of it. Now, after many years have passed, it just looks dated. Today there are about a thousand  better golf games around. Sonic! The game that put the Genesis on the map so to speak. The speed of this game was quite the achievement in it's time. The character was super cool, and the graphics were awesome. Played like a dream too. Yes, sonic had everything. To me it is better designed then most of the Mario games. Too bad they never made a cool Sonic game for the Saturn, maybe it could've survived with Playstation. Sonic Crackers  (Sega)
Your probably saying to yourself "I never heard of Sonic Crackers". Well, not many other people have either. Sonic Crackers is an unreleased game made by Sega. The game, at this stage, is uncomplete.  Probably won't be completed either. It is however complete enough to give a  little fun for awhile. I found this game by accident looking on the emulation sites. If you want to try it, I suggest you download the Sega Genesis emulator "Genecyst", and do a search for the ROM of the game. It goes by Sonic Crackers, as well as Sonic 4. Now, about the game... Sonic Crackers is a game very similar to Knuckles Chaotic on the 32x.  Your character (Sonic) is permantly attached to his counterpart tails. The game is different from the other Sonics because you must use your character to propel you through the stages. It's kinda like a "sling shot" effect. Actually, I didn't like this in Knuckles Chaotic. I found it too hard to manupilate the characters. This game is different. It actually is much easier, and feels alot faster too. Graphically it doesn't stand a chance against Knuckles (Which is one of the best looking 2D games of all time), but it still doesn't look too bad. I don't believe the graphics were finished anyway. This must've been in the works, and got trashed when Sega decided to release the new 32x. I'm not sure,  it's just a guess. Anyway, it is very apparent that the two games are related somehow. I recommend you give it a try. At least it doesn't cost anything!

I like Pinball games, and I love Sonic games, but somehow the two don't mix well together here. There's just not enough variety. One disappointment is that It doesn't really  feel like your playing a sonic game. The cutness, and the speed of sonic are all but gone. The Genesis looked so good at the time that I thought I was gonna get a perfect conversion. Well, the perfect conversion never happened (at least not until the 32x), but it is quite the awesome shooter. Even today, it still has one of the best 3D looks of any shooter on the Genesis. When this game was released, it was hailed as the greatest racing game ever. I remember reading about it in the gaming magazines. In almost every instance it got perfect scores. The game had everything. Championship modes, a big name licensee, selectable tracks, super fast speed, and even a rear view mirror. This game was worlds ahead of it's closest competition. It's funny, play it today and it's almost laughable. A decent racer for the on the road fun (i.e.Nomad), but quite boring compared to today's console games.

Thunder Force II (Technosoft)
Thunderforce III is my all time favorite Genesis shooter. This game, the release before it, rates right up there with it. The only thing that keeps this game from being as good as the sequel is the fact that it mixes side scrolling levels, with overhead levels. The overhead levels just aren't as good. The game rocks overall though. Great graphics, awesome firepower, and real digitized voices make this a winner. A must have for your shooter collection!

Vectorman 2 (Sega)
I don't know..... The rendered graphics are kinda cool, and the game is pretty big, but overall this was a let down for me. This was one of those games that Sega was really hyping, but I just didn't get it. It just felt the same all the way through. Sure, the levels were varied, but there wasn't really enough gameplay variation to keep me interested. I guess the biggest flaw would have to be that you can't save anywhere.  If developers would realize how big a drawback this is, and overcome it somehow, I'm sure they would sell alot more games. Nobody over age 7 likes repeating complex tasks again and again after they have conqured an obstacle. Ok, but not that great.

Whip Rush (Renovation)
Quite a decent shooter, with tons of gameplay variation. This was one of my first Genesis shooters, and I played the heck out of it. Today, it looks a little dated, but in it's time it was awesome. Still good fun if you find a copy.
