Here is yet another game that I am ready to review long before I will be finished with the game. It's not that I'm rushing the review, it's just that the game is so well balanced that I will be coming back to it again and again.
For years, I have waited to see a decent playing Motocross game. Finally, after many company failures, someone came out with a motocross game that is fit to be played. The others, in one way or another, failed miserably on at least one portion of the game. If it wasn't the playability, it was the graphics. If it wasn't the graphics, it was the tracks, ect. ect..
Moto racer is not just a motocross racer, it also has GP races too. Usually, I would like to see a game stick to one subject, but here it seems to work well. There are a total of ten tracks, and a large supply of bikes with varying speed/control characteristics. As expected in any good racer, there are practice races, single races, and championship races.
The graphics are good, and the sound is decent (I would however like the bikes to sound a little better.). These qualities aren't what set it apart though.
The major difference this game has over the others is control. It is excellent!! In many of these types of games, the bikes are almost impossible to control. They usually tip to easy, and if they don't they can't make the cut for the corners. I once made a comment about Sega's "Hang On-GP". I mentioned that it would be an awesome game if the control was only better. At the time, I mainly blamed the Digital joypad, and faulted the programmers for not using the analog controller to the best of it's ability. I actually thought digital pads could not work for motorcycle games. I was wrong!! This game controls great even with a digital pad. I haven't tried an analog, but I'd bet it just gets better.
The other major difference are the tracks. All are great here!! They really give you the feeling that you are in the race. You'll have to get a few first place championship finishes to see all the tracks (or view the Xcessive Gamer cheat codes), but it is well worth it. There are dirt tracks, road tracks, even a wall tracks (really weird). Well designed from start to finish!
The only real complaints I have are the inability to flick your motocross bike in dirt mode, and lack of real licensed bikes. Minor indeed, but still worth mentioning.
All I got to say is, if you like motorcycle racing games, this is the best one to buy so far!
