Pitfall was one of the greatest games released on the Atari 2600. The graphics, and gameplay far surpassed the other games of that era. Pitfall was a huge success for Activision, and we all waited for a sequel. We didn't get one, at least until now.
This time it's Harry Jr. who is the main character, and he's out to rescue his father Harry who has been kidnapped by the dreaded warrior spirit Zakelua (If you remember Harry Sr. was the main character in the original Pitfall). You run, crawl, climb ropes, ride ziplines, ride sketecars, bungee jump, shoot slingshots, throw bomerangs, ect. ect.. ect.. to save your father Harry Sr.
This story, like the original, is set in the jungle. You face all the foes you'd expect in a jungle. Jaguars, hawks, and snakes are a common sight. You also see things that wouldn't be so common in a jungle such as, Vapor ghosts, gargoyles, spirits, and skeleton soliders. All look very good, and give that jungle feel.
It has all the features you'd expect from a game like this, and even a few extras. You even get the original pitfall hidden somewhere in the game. No feature really stands out, yet theres nothing bad either.
I had high expectations for this game, but I have to say the game fell a little short. If it wasn't the sequal to Pitfall, I would've liked it better. Since it is, I was dissapointed. "Pitfall" is like a legend. "Pitfall- The Mayan Adventure" definately is not. It's just too average. While playing, I just kept thinking "This is the sequal to Pitfall?" I wasn't that impressed.
This isn't a bad game, it's just not great. It has great animations, smooth gameplay, and is generally fun to play. The music was repetitious, and the scrolling was choppy, but overall these are the only real faults. It just didn't live up to the standards set by the original Pitfall. Like I said before, I just expected more.
If your looking for a good adventure, Pitfall should satisfy. If you wanted the legend, you'll be disappointed!
